PRE-CON – Wilderness Survival Medicine

As the general population moves further into the backcountry for enjoyment, the role of EMS mandates that we follow them, often putting our own lives in danger due to the harshness of the wilderness setting. Join me as we explore the important aspect of SURVIVAL! It is imperative that EMS responders know how to survive if caught in unexpected situations. In turn, you will be more effective at helping your patients and will not become a burden on others. Understand the RULE – once you enter a wilderness setting, you are responsible for yourself – ALWAYS – no matter if you are recreating or responding in an EMS role.

We will discuss topics such as weather, fire, shelter, clothing, water, navigation, and good gear to have, and we will also add some wilderness medicine.

This will be an all-day adventure. You will go home with some extra knowledge, some new gear, some food, and, most importantly, the ability to survive the unexpected. No, we will not be “naked and afraid, ” and you will not starve!!

Taught by Doug Murdock, MD, along with other individuals who have years of experience in the backcountry.
