What happens to your head as a 2500-pound bull steps on it, or you slam into a brick wall at 75 miles per hour? How can that brain box take the hit and still survive? What happens to the structures around the brain, and what really happens to the brain, will be discussed. How can we make the most of our treatment to minimize any long-term issues for TBI patients?
Objectives:
- Describe the anatomy and physiology of the brain and surrounding structures and explain how they respond to traumatic forces.
- Explain the pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury (TBI), including primary and secondary brain injury.
- Recognize assessment findings and injury patterns associated with TBI, including signs of increased intracranial pressure and worsening neurological function.
- Apply evidence-based prehospital treatment strategies for TBI to minimize secondary brain injury and improve patient outcomes.
