Recognizing Invisible Wounds: Post-Traumatic Stress and the Journey to Recovery

This candid presentation draws from real-world experience combined with clinical expertise in public safety and mental health to address a critical issue many first responders face but few discuss: Post-Traumatic Stress.

Led by Dr. Tia Hollingshead-Styer, drawing on her experience as a certified crisis worker, her work in regional emergency departments, and her collaborations with public safety departments nationwide, Dr. Tia explores the reality of trauma accumulation, the confusion and isolation of undiagnosed PTS, and the relief that comes with understanding and treatment.

As a Department of Justice subject-matter expert who trains first responders across the country, Dr. Tia understands both the clinical and cultural aspects of public safety and mental health. Attendees will learn to recognize PTS symptoms, understand why first responder culture often prevents help-seeking, and discover why asking for help is actually the strongest thing we can do.

This presentation aims to break the silence, validate experiences, and provide a clear path forward for those struggling with the mental toll of serving our communities—delivered by someone who has worked alongside first responders on the frontlines and in the treatment room.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress in themselves and colleagues.
  2. Understand that Post-Traumatic Stress can be an occupational reality for first responders, not a personal weakness or failure.
  3. Take actionable steps toward seeking help, supporting colleagues, and breaking the culture of silence.
