Nasal Cannulas are not just for a Bump in Your O2 Anymore

This course provides EMS providers with the knowledge and practical skills to safely initiate, monitor, and manage high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy in the prehospital environment. Participants will learn the indications, contraindications, setup, and troubleshooting of HFNC systems to optimize oxygenation in patients with respiratory distress or failure. Emphasis is placed on integrating HFNC into airway management protocols and improving patient outcomes prior to hospital arrival.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the physiology and clinical benefits of high-flow nasal cannula therapy compared to conventional oxygen delivery methods.
  2. Identify indications, contraindications, and patient selection criteria for HFNC use in the prehospital setting.
  3. Demonstrate proper setup, initiation, and adjustment of HFNC equipment, including flow rates, FiO₂, and humidification systems.
  4. Recognize and manage potential complications or system failures associated with HFNC during transport and patient care.
