Medical Response To Chemical Exposure

Chemical exposures remain a significant hazard for emergency responders and can occur in industrial settings, transportation incidents, agricultural operations, and other emergencies. This session focuses on three of the most encountered hazardous chemicals—chlorine, ammonia, and carbon monoxide. Participants will compare the hazards of each chemical, recognize their effects on the body, review appropriate medical treatment, and discuss patient care considerations from initial exposure through recovery.

Objectives:

  • What routes of exposure do these most toxic gases pose?
  • How will emergency responders protect themselves from these hazards during a response?
  • How does knowledge of vapor densities, flammable limits, and toxicity measurements protect emergency responders?
