Lead Abatement – Understanding the Risks to First Responders

Lead hazards continue to exist at older industrial sites, former mining operations, fuel storage facilities, gun ranges, and other locations where abatement work is performed. Emergency responders may encounter workers wearing advanced protective equipment who are at risk for heat-related illness, traumatic injuries, and lead exposure. This session will help EMS providers and first responders recognize these environments, understand the associated health hazards, and apply safe response practices that protect both patients and responders.

Objectives:

  • What risk does lead pose to emergency workers?
  • Where is it most likely to be found?
  • What protections should emergency responders take when responding to lead-exposed individuals?
