Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) – A Hidden Danger For EMS And First Responders

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is one of the most dangerous toxic gases encountered in industry and presents a significant risk to EMS providers and other first responders. Exposure can occur during incidents involving oil and gas operations, wastewater systems, agriculture, confined spaces, and other industrial settings. This session will review the hazards of H₂S, the importance of recognizing high-risk environments, and the critical role of communication from dispatch through patient care to help ensure a safe and effective response.

Objectives:

  • What health risks does H₂S pose to responders?
  • How will symptoms present in an exposed individual?
  • Where is it most likely to occur?
  • What protection should responders take to protect themselves?
