CHF – “Are They Drowning?”
Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) often experience severe shortness of breath that can feel like they are drowning. Recognizing the signs and symptoms early is critical to providing effective care and improving patient outcomes. This session reviews the basic anatomy and function of the heart, explains the different types of heart failure, and discusses why fluid builds in the lungs. Participants will also learn practical assessment techniques and review prehospital treatment options that help support breathing, improve oxygenation, and prepare patients for transport.
Objectives:
- Review the basic anatomy and function of the heart related to congestive heart failure.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of the different types of heart failure.
- Discuss appropriate prehospital assessment and treatment strategies within the EMT and Advanced EMT scope of practice.
