AEIOU – TIPS – What Causes Altered Mental Status

Altered mental status can be a difficult diagnosis for your patients and an even harder treatment plan.  What do we do for our patients who are acting “abnormal.”  Where do we take them, what treatment do they need?  Are we able to provide the treatment, comfort and support they need?  By attending this class, we will explore what the AEIOU-TIPS mnemonic can provide us as we treat our altered patients.

Objectives:

  1. Learners will be able to recall and explain each component of the AEIOU-TIPS mnemonic (Alcohol, Endocrine/Electrolytes/Epilepsy, Insulin, Overdose/Oxygen, Uremia, Trauma, Infection, Psychosis, Stroke) and apply it systematically to evaluate potential causes of altered mental status in clinical scenarios.
  2. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and differentiate common etiologies of altered mental status, such as hypoglycemia, stroke, or intoxication, by analyzing patient case studies and correlating symptoms with the AEIOU-TIPS framework.
  3. Participants will learn to perform a focused clinical assessment for patients with altered mental status, including obtaining a relevant history, conducting a physical exam, and provide the appropriate treatment based on the AEIOU-TIPS differential diagnosis.
  4. Learners will be able to propose initial management strategies for patients with altered mental status, prioritizing life-threatening conditions (e.g., hypoxia, hypoglycemia) and applying evidence-based interventions guided by the AEIOU-TIPS mnemonic.
