Good Samaritans: Unintended Consequences of Civil Service
Serving in the community presents many blessings, but can also be a cautionary tale. Many people say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Until you have been tested in the crucible of the criminal justice system, you will never be able to adequately anticipate the dangers of exposing first responders to potential legal liability for their good intentions.
Objectives:
- Identify potential legal risks associated with first responders serving in the community and interacting with the criminal justice system.
- Recognize how well-intentioned actions can create unintended legal consequences, including potential liability for individuals and their organizations.
- Apply risk-awareness and sound decision-making principles when responding to community situations to protect both the public and first responders from avoidable legal exposure.
