Aging Gracefully in EMS
A humorous journey through life’s ups and downs as we grow older in EMS. Not only is the field of medicine changing rapidly, but so is our ability to continuously meet the physical and mental demands it places on our bodies. Techniques one can use to stay healthy in this often unforgiving pre-hospital care profession will be explored, along with a deeper appreciation of the caring needs of our elderly population.
Objectives:
- Identify the warning signs of an aging medic on duty.
- Describe the physiological changes the body experiences as it enters the middle ages of forty and beyond.
- Describe the growing changes in EMS and medicine in general and how to survive them through the use of humor.
- List techniques one can use to stay healthy mentally and physiologically as one grows older as a health care provider.
- Describe how one’s own appreciation of growing older can further enhance one’s skills when working with the geriatric patient.
