What is Beyond the Dust? Asbestos Hazards for EMS and First Responders

Asbestos may be out of sight, but it remains a serious hazard during demolition, renovation, and abatement projects. First responders can be exposed to dangerous airborne particles while working in environments that also increase the risk of heat-related illness. This session will discuss the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, recognize situations where these hazards may be present, and review practical steps to help protect responders from both immediate and long-term health effects.

Objectives:

  • Besides inhalation, what other routes of exposure does asbestos represent?
  • What chronic hazards exist with asbestos exposures?
  • Why is heat stress so commonly associated with asbestos remediation work?
  • What are the different types of asbestos, and where are they most commonly found?
