Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! – Small Plane Crash Responses

In the United States there is nearly 700 to 1000 airports, including public and private airports, heliports and landing strips in almost every state, and they all provide service small airplanes. During this session First Responders will learn how to safely respond to a small airplane crash and recognize potential hazards. At the completion of this session attendees will have a better understanding of the types of injuries associated with a small plane crash and will learn how chaotic the scene may be. Often these small planes crash in neighborhoods not far from the airport. This type of incident is considered High Risk, Low Frequency, so training and practice can make a difference between a successful or unsuccessful outcome for plane passengers and civilians on the ground. Using a unique power point presentation, attendees will learn how to safely respond, perform rescue, properly move patients to safety and triage.

Triage is the process of determining the priority of patients’ treatments based on the severity of their condition. This rations patient treatment efficiently when resources are insufficient for all to be treated immediately.

Attendees will learn about small airplanes, common causes of small airplane crashes, responder safety, safety on scene and preserving evidence of fatal crashes. Attendees will learn how to triage using triage tags, ribbons & tarps, the use of a causality collection point and the importance of Incident Command.

During this session we will review case studies of hazardous material incidents that have occurred in the United States in the last 4 decades and we will explain why One (1) Mile away, might be the safest place for EMS to stage if no one is injured…

Objectives:

  • Participants will learn how to respond safely to a small plane crash and recognize potential hazards.
  • We will discuss safety on the scene for responders and the use of PPE.
  • We will review patient rescue, extrication, triage, treatment and transport.
  • We will discuss how to zone off the area and preserve evidence in fatal crashes.
  • We will discuss the importance of having a response plan that also includes the Incident Command System and pre-written press releases that can help you better communicate with the community.
